Downfield,
one of Scotland's outstanding courses. Within touching distance
of both St Andrews and Carnoustie, Downfield is often overlooked
in favour of its more illustrious neighbours. Parkland layouts
seldom come better boasting an impressive following among
those who appreciate the pleasures of top quality parkland
golf.
Five time Open Champion, Peter Thomas, is among an influential
following describing Downfield as 'One of the finest inland
courses I have played anywhere' high praise indeed. Thomas's
comments are not made lightly and there are few players
whose opinions are more highly respected, 'It's a tough,
demanding test of golf amidst some of the most picturesque
scenery' all of this is true as an ever increasing number
of visitors are finding to their great pleasure.
One of the treasures of Scottish golf, Downfield extends
a warm welcome, and coupled with generous hospitality the
surroundings are nothing short of spectacular, with fairways
lined by mature strands of trees, lush fairways, with a
wonderful sense of peace and tranquillity.
Shortly
before the end of 1932 a general meeting was convened and
Downfield golf club officially constitued. Golf course architect,
C.K. Cotton was instrumental in Downfield's spectacular
layout making full use of the marvellous surroundings and
creating in the process one of the top Inland Courses in
the British Isles. Today the club attracts many top professional
and amateur events, including the Scottish PGA Championship,
The Scottish Amateur and Boy's Championships, along with
the Open Championship Qualifying, it was from this course
in 1999 that Paul Lawrie qualified for the Open Championship,
and as history now shows, his stunning success.
Downfield is well worth adding to your golfing interary,
be it a Private Vacation or a Corporate Event, this is one
course not to be overlooked and will draw many admiring
glances in the years to come.
