Robert
Trent Jone's design and the collaboration of Severiano Ballesteros
who, amongst other things, remodelled the 17th hole making
it more difficult, were rewarded in several occasions by specialized
journalists who ranked Valderrama as the best golf course
in Europe.
The choice of this venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup meant a new
definite world confirmation. Full of difficulties, its round
has been thought out for players with an acceptable level.
As an example, and just to name a few, we can mention the
almost one hundred bunkers and elevated greens that mark out
its well-traced fairways.
The par-five 4th hole is probably the most popular one, of
which it is said that only the great champions can do it in
two shots. Other terrible tests can be encountered in the
par-four 8th where good aim is needed so as to avoid the trees
near the green which is also protected by an enourmous bunker,
or the already mentioned 17th; or the 2nd, one of the most
difficult holes as one must play towards the left so as to
be on line with the green. Amongst the many possibilities
available, we bet on par-three 15th, with marvellous views,
but to reach its long and narrow green it is necessary to
border a gully and climb the hillside. |
